Technical Information

Technical Information & Stone Bathtub Care

Our marble and natural stone bathtubs are individually handcrafted from a solid block of stone. Each bathtub is substantial in weight and entirely unique, displaying the natural colour variation, veining, mineral markings and tonal movement of the selected material.

Natural variations are not defects. They are inherent characteristics of genuine marble, onyx, quartzite and other natural stones, ensuring that no two bathtubs are exactly alike.

Weight and Site Preparation

Solid stone bathtubs are exceptionally heavy. The total installed load includes the weight of the bathtub, the water and the person using it. The intended installation area must therefore be assessed before delivery.

A qualified structural engineer, contractor or experienced installer should confirm that the floor can safely support the combined load. Additional reinforcement may be required, particularly for installations on upper floors, suspended floors or timber structures.

The customer is responsible for ensuring that:

  • The floor and supporting structure are suitable for the total installed weight
  • Doorways, corridors, staircases and access routes are sufficiently wide
  • Suitable lifting equipment and experienced personnel are available
  • Plumbing and drainage positions are prepared before installation
  • The bathtub can be safely transported from the delivery point to its final position

Due to the weight and delicate nature of solid stone, professional handling and installation are essential.

Delivery and Handling

The bathtub should remain securely packaged until it reaches the installation area. It must never be lifted by the rim, waste opening or any projecting edge.

Appropriate lifting straps, specialist moving equipment and a sufficient number of trained personnel should be used. The bathtub must be fully supported during movement and should not be dragged, dropped, rolled or placed onto an uneven surface.

Inspect the bathtub before installation and report any transit damage before it is moved into position or connected.

Installation

Installation must be carried out by experienced professionals familiar with solid stone sanitaryware.

The bathtub should be positioned on a flat, level and structurally sound surface. The entire base must be adequately supported to prevent stress points. Plumbing connections should remain accessible where possible, and all wastes, fittings, sealants and adhesives must be suitable for use with natural stone.

Do not overtighten waste fittings or plumbing connections, as excessive pressure may crack or damage the stone. Only non-staining, natural-stone-compatible silicone and installation products should be used.

A full water and drainage test should be completed before the installation is permanently sealed or enclosed.

Natural Stone Characteristics

Veining, tonal variation, mineral deposits, crystalline markings, small surface pits and natural fissures may be visible within the stone. Certain veins or fissures may be professionally filled, reinforced or treated during production to improve the structure and finish of the bathtub.

These features are part of the natural formation of the material and do not affect the bathtub’s intended use when correctly installed and maintained.

The appearance of the delivered bathtub will vary from samples, showroom pieces and website imagery because every block of natural stone has its own distinctive pattern.

Cleaning and Routine Care

Clean the bathtub using warm water, a soft cloth and a mild, pH-neutral cleaner specifically approved for natural stone.

After cleaning, rinse the surface thoroughly and dry it with a soft microfibre cloth. Regular drying will help reduce water marks, soap residue and limescale build-up.

Bath oils, salts, soaps, cosmetics and strongly coloured products should be rinsed away promptly. Natural stone is porous and may absorb liquids or pigments if they remain on the surface for an extended period.

Do not use:

  • Bleach, ammonia or strong chemical cleaners
  • Vinegar, lemon, citrus or acidic cleaning products
  • Abrasive powders, scouring pads or rough sponges
  • Standard limescale removers unless approved for marble
  • Harsh bathroom sprays that are not suitable for natural stone
  • Strongly pigmented bath products without testing them first

Acidic and abrasive substances may cause staining, etching, discolouration or permanent dulling of the stone’s finish.

Sealing and Protection

Natural stone may require sealing before use and periodic resealing throughout its lifetime. The required frequency will depend on the stone type, surface finish, level of use and sealing product applied.

A professional stone specialist should advise on the most appropriate penetrating sealer and maintenance schedule. Always test any cleaner, treatment or sealing product on a small, discreet area before applying it to the complete bathtub.

Sealing helps reduce moisture absorption and staining but does not make natural stone completely stain-proof.

Water Temperature and Everyday Use

Avoid sudden and extreme changes in temperature. Do not pour boiling water directly onto a cold stone surface, as rapid temperature changes may place unnecessary stress on the material.

Fill the bathtub gradually, beginning with warm water and adjusting the temperature as required. Extremely hot items should not be placed directly onto the stone.

Avoid dropping heavy or sharp objects into the bathtub. Although solid stone is highly durable, a significant impact may cause chips, cracks or surface damage.

Do not leave standing water, wet accessories, metal containers or strongly coloured products on the rim or inside the bathtub for prolonged periods.

Ongoing Maintenance

Regularly inspect the waste connection, silicone seals and surrounding installation area. Any movement, leaking or deterioration should be addressed immediately by a qualified professional.

Minor surface marks, staining or wear should be assessed by a natural stone specialist. Do not attempt to repair, polish or chemically treat the bathtub without professional advice.

With correct structural preparation, specialist installation and appropriate care, a solid marble or natural stone bathtub will provide a distinctive and timeless centrepiece for many years.
