Technical Information & Natural Stone Coffee Table Care
Our marble and natural stone coffee tables are individually handcrafted from carefully selected blocks of genuine stone. Each table is substantial in weight and entirely unique, displaying the natural colour variation, veining, mineral markings and tonal movement of the chosen material.
Depending on the design and dimensions, material may be carefully removed from the underside to reduce the overall weight while retaining the appearance, strength and substantial character of solid stone.
Natural variations are not defects. They are inherent characteristics of genuine marble, onyx, quartzite, travertine and other natural stones, ensuring that no two coffee tables are exactly alike.
Weight and Site Preparation
Natural stone coffee tables are exceptionally heavy and require careful planning before delivery.
The intended placement area should be assessed to ensure that the floor and supporting structure can safely accommodate the table’s weight. Additional advice or reinforcement may be required for upper floors, suspended floors, timber structures or properties with restricted access.
The customer is responsible for ensuring that:
- The floor and supporting structure are suitable for the table’s weight
- Doorways, corridors, staircases and access routes are sufficiently wide
- The final position has been prepared before delivery
- Suitable lifting equipment and experienced personnel are available
- The table can be transported safely from the delivery point to its intended location
- The finished floor is protected during delivery and positioning
Due to the weight and delicate nature of natural stone, professional handling and installation are strongly recommended.
Delivery and Handling
The coffee table should remain securely packaged until it reaches the intended installation area.
It must never be lifted by the edge of the tabletop, decorative projections or any unsupported section. The table should be lifted from beneath using appropriate lifting straps, specialist moving equipment and a sufficient number of trained personnel.
The table must remain fully supported during movement and must not be:
- Dragged across the floor
- Dropped or rolled
- Tilted onto an unsupported edge
- Placed on an uneven surface
- Lifted by the rim or tabletop edge
Dragging the table may damage both the stone and the flooring beneath it.
Inspect the coffee table carefully before positioning it and report any visible transit damage before the packaging is discarded or the table is moved into its final location.
Positioning and Installation
The coffee table must be placed on a flat, level and structurally sound surface.
The base should be evenly supported to prevent concentrated pressure points, rocking or unnecessary stress within the stone. Uneven flooring may require professional assessment or discreet levelling measures.
Do not use improvised wedges, hard metal packers or materials that could place excessive pressure on one area of the base.
Protective felt, rubber or non-staining floor pads may be used where appropriate, provided they are suitable for the weight of the table and do not react with the stone or floor finish.
Once positioned, the table should not be repeatedly moved. Any future relocation should be carried out by experienced furniture movers or stone-handling professionals.
Natural Stone Characteristics
Veining, tonal variation, mineral deposits, crystalline markings, small surface pits and natural fissures may be visible throughout the stone.
Certain veins, cavities or fissures may be professionally filled, reinforced or treated during production to improve the structure and finish of the coffee table. These treatments are common within natural stone manufacturing and do not detract from the authenticity of the material.
The following may naturally occur:
- Variations in colour and tone
- Differences in the direction or density of veining
- Small pits or pinholes
- Crystalline deposits
- Natural fissures and mineral lines
- Subtle differences in polish or surface texture
- Filled or reinforced areas within the stone
These features form part of the natural character of the material and should not be considered manufacturing defects.
The appearance of the delivered coffee table will vary from samples, showroom pieces and website imagery because every block of natural stone has its own distinctive formation and pattern.
Cleaning and Routine Care
Clean the coffee table using warm water, a soft cloth and a mild, pH-neutral cleaner specifically approved for natural stone.
After cleaning, wipe away any remaining moisture and dry the surface thoroughly with a clean microfibre cloth. Regular drying will help reduce water marks, residue and surface staining.
Spills should be blotted immediately rather than wiped across the surface, particularly:
- Wine and alcoholic drinks
- Coffee and tea
- Fruit juice
- Vinegar and citrus
- Oils and sauces
- Cosmetics and perfumes
- Ink and strongly coloured liquids
Natural stone is porous and may absorb liquids or pigments when they remain on the surface for an extended period.
Always use coasters, placemats and protective mats beneath drinks, decorative objects, candles, vases and serving dishes.
Products to Avoid
Do not use:
- Bleach, ammonia or strong chemical cleaners
- Vinegar, lemon or citrus-based products
- Acidic cleaning sprays
- Abrasive powders or cream cleaners
- Scouring pads, wire wool or rough sponges
- Standard household limescale removers
- Furniture polish not approved for natural stone
- Solvents, paint removers or harsh degreasers
- Strongly pigmented products without testing them first
Acidic substances can react with marble and other calcium-based stones, causing etching, discolouration or permanent dull patches.
Abrasive cleaners may scratch the polished finish and should never be used.
Sealing and Protection
Natural stone may require sealing before use and periodic resealing throughout its lifetime.
The required frequency will depend on:
- The type of stone
- The surface finish
- The level of use
- The surrounding environment
- The sealing product originally applied
A professional stone specialist should advise on the most appropriate penetrating sealer and maintenance schedule.
Always test cleaners, sealers and treatment products on a small, discreet area before applying them to the complete table.
Sealing helps reduce moisture absorption and staining but does not make natural stone completely stain-proof. Spills should still be removed promptly.
Heat, Moisture and Everyday Use
Do not place hot pans, serving dishes, candles, heated appliances or other high-temperature items directly onto the stone. Always use a heat-resistant mat or trivet.
Avoid sudden and extreme changes in temperature, as thermal shock may place unnecessary stress on the material.
Do not leave the following on the surface for prolonged periods:
- Standing water
- Wet glasses or containers
- Damp plant pots
- Metal objects that may rust
- Strongly coloured decorative items
- Oil-based products
- Fresh flowers or foliage without a protective tray
Plant pots and vases should always be placed on a waterproof, non-staining protective mat. Moisture trapped beneath objects may cause staining or mineral marks.
Preventing Damage
Although natural stone is strong and durable, it may still chip, scratch or crack if subjected to excessive impact or concentrated pressure.
To protect the table:
- Do not sit, stand or climb on the tabletop
- Do not drop heavy or sharp objects onto the surface
- Do not drag decorative items across the stone
- Use protective pads beneath ornaments and accessories
- Avoid placing excessive weight on one edge
- Keep the table away from unstable or uneven flooring
- Do not attempt to move the table without suitable assistance
Take particular care around the edges, as these areas may be more vulnerable to impact damage.
Ongoing Maintenance
Regularly inspect the coffee table for changes in stability, surface condition or floor contact.
Minor marks, staining, etching or wear should be assessed by a natural stone specialist. Many surface issues can be professionally polished, refinished or treated.
Do not attempt to grind, polish, fill or chemically treat the stone without professional advice, as unsuitable products or methods may cause permanent damage.
With appropriate handling, careful positioning and regular maintenance, a marble or natural stone coffee table will provide a distinctive and timeless centrepiece for many years.
